The Board’s primary and foremost concern is the equalization of real estate assessments. The BOE has full authority to raise, decrease, or affirm assessments as per state laws and guidelines. The BOE is independent of the City Assessor’s Office.
There are currently five members who serve up to two four-year terms and are appointed by the Circuit Court. Compensation consists of $50 per attended meeting. All members shall own an interest in real property. At least 30% of the members shall be real estate professionals.
Per State Code (Section 58.1-3374), all members must have a day of continuing education including a basic course of instruction given by the Dept. of Taxation under Section 58.1-206).
BOE Members hearing appeals for the July 1, 2025 values:
The BOE shall hear appeals for 2025 real estate assessments at City Hall (Building 1) in the City Council Conference Room #2034 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the following Thursdays beginning the month of July. Additional meeting dates may be added at the Chairman’s discretion. All meetings are recorded and open to the public.
