The staff of the Assessor’s Office wants to ensure your assessment is accurate and equitable.

If you feel your assessment is incorrect or have questions regarding your assessment, please call our office at 757-385-4601 to discuss your concerns with an appraiser. This is an opportunity to explain the assessment process and confirm the record for the property characteristics are correct. Our goal is to ensure your assessment is accurate and equitable.

The valuation of a property may only be discussed with the property owner or a duly authorized agent for the owner. In the case of a representative of the owner requesting an administrative review, an original signed Letter of Authorization or notarized Power of Attorney granted by the property owner is required.

There are several levels of appeal available to our property owners.  While it is not necessary to appeal at each level, it is highly recommended the appeal begin with a call to the assessor as many times the concerns can be addressed without additional time and cost.

  • Request for Reappraisal – An informal sharing of information and discussion of concerns. Appeals are accepted March through April 30th of each tax year. The application and additional information can be found on our Request for Reappraisal page.
  • Board of Equalization - While it is not a requirement, it is recommended you first file an appeal with the Real Estate Assessor as many times a review will be all that is required.
    • Appeals may be filed with the Board of Equalization from March through June 30th of each tax year. The application and process information can be found on our Board of Equalization page.
