The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) administers the Virginia Landmarks Register program designed to promote the preservation of Virginia's historic properties.

This registry was created in 1966 and serves as the state's official list of properties important to Virginia's history. Properties included on the state register qualify for a lower tax rate. This reduced rate applies to the building only and not to the land. Virginia properties that are listed on the state and national registers are available online.
